The Dongpo jin hat (东坡巾) is a traditional Chinese headwear associated with the famous Song Dynasty poet and scholar, Su Shi, also known as Su Dongpo. Su Dongpo often wore this distinctive hat, which became a symbol of his scholarly and artistic persona.
Dongpo jin hat is a square-based hat features a striking double-tiered design: a tall inner barrel crowned by four shorter outer walls, creating a geometric, stepped profile. The inner barrel represented the scholar's upright moral character, while the four outer walls may echoed the 4 Confucian ideals. And the two long flowing tails that drapes down the back make it looks more elegant. In formal settings, wearers aligned the front ridge precisely between the eyebrows to demonstrate mental focus.
The hat is often depicted in portraits of Su Dongpo and is a recognizable element of his legacy.
