Wiki

Jieze (介帻), an ancient Chinese headwear with a raised crown and long flaps, was initially worn by low-status soldiers and servants during the Warring States period (475–221 BCE). Its rise to prominence began when Emperor Yuan of Han (48–33 BCE) and later Wang Mang (c. 45 BCE–23 CE) adopted it, leading elites to follow. Enhanced functionally and symbolically, it became standard attire for Eastern Han (25–220 CE) officials and scholars. By the Song dynasty, ritual musicians also wore it in ceremonies, cementing its status as a cultural icon.

This Jieze features a raised "介"-shaped crown with rigid ear panels fixed upright—distinct from the flexible flaps of Eastern Han prototypes. Originating from Song-Ming ritual reinterpretations, its stiffened lacquer structure prioritizes symbolic authority over functionality, reflecting later dynasties' ceremonial emphasis on visual solemnity and hierarchical power.
