Wiki
Wushamao, also known as the Black Gauze Hat, was a traditional hat worn by ancient Chinese officials. It features a flat top with two long, wing-like extensions on either side, known as "double wings".
Wushamao was developed from Futou, which originated during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, and became a formal part of official attire in the Sui Dynasty and gained popularity during the Tang Dynasty. By the Song Dynasty, the hat featured distinctive "wings" on either side, which were added to prevent officials from whispering during court sessions. And it was officially called "Wushamao" during the Ming Dynasty.
The Wushamao symbolized official status and was made from black gauze fabric. It was not only a practical item but also a significant cultural symbol, representing the authority and dignity of the wearer. The hat's design evolved over time, with variations in shape and decoration reflecting the wearer's rank and the era's aesthetics.
